Abstract
For the purpose of evaluating the protective effects of skin barriers,a survey was conducted which measured changes over time in the status of peristomal skin management at the site of application in 113 intestinal ostomy patients. The evaluation period for all patients was more than one year.
The following is a summary of the results of this survey.
1)Very few patients were unaffected by skin irritation, even early in the postoperative period, and the proportion of cases experiencing skin lesions increased progressively over time.
2)Circumstances leading to the development of skin lesions differed according to the types and grades of lesion.
These results suggested that comprehensive and symptom-free skin management can not be accomplished even with the utilization of skin barriers; nor is it possible to correctly evaluate the usefulness of skin barriers by assessments made at a given point in time since the effects of skin barriers are both qualitatively and quantitatively dynamic in nature.
