Abstract

In this study, to know elderly drivers hazard perception ability on expressway, we developed a hazard perception test. Based on the statistical analysis result of accident records on expressway in past five years, we selected elderly drivers' accident-prone spots. Then we created traffic scene videos at the spots for hazard perception test using three vehicles to simulate risky traffic conditions frequently occurred at the spots. As a result of experiment with 40 participants (20 elderlies and 20 non-elderlies), we found out that elderlies' hazard perception test scores (corresponding to hazard perception ability) were significantly lower than non-elderlies'. Moreover, we found out that elderlies were not good at (1) predicting surrounding vehicles' movement which could increase collision risk at junctions or toll barriers, (2) predicting change of traffic conditions around while simultaneously paying attention to multiple vehicles around.
