Graft copolymerization of acrylamide onto unbeaten and beaten pulp (N. B. KP) were carried out by the ceric ion method.
Using the grafted pulp of various degree of grafting, grafted pulp papers were prepared and following result were obtained.
1) The pulp papers could be manufactured from the hydrophilic acrylamide grafted pulp fiber by neither beating nor addition of binder.
2) The strength properties of papers made from unbeaten grafted pulp were obtained following results. Breaking length at first increased with increasing degree of grafting, reached maximum value at the degree of grafting about 50%, and then fell off again. The maxima in burst factor and tear factor were the degree of grafting about 30-50% and 20-30%, respectively,
3) The degree of grafting of beaten pulp tended to decrease with increasing degree of beating.
4) The relationship between the strength of the various beaten grafted pulp papers and the degree of grafting were obtained following results. Breaking length and burst factor of papers showed maxima values, and tear factor diminished with increasing degree of grafting.
