In recent years, the pulp and paper industry has seen tremendous developments apace. The productions of paper and paperboard soared from 410, 000 metric tons in 1970, 1, 479, 000 metric tons in 1980, 3, 337, 000 metric tons in 1990 to 4, 199, 000 metric tons in 1994. The annual per capita consumption of paper and board products also grew from 30.4 kilograms in 1970, 79.8 kilograms in 1980, 166.0 kg in 1990 and up to 223.5 kg in 1994. In the following article, we shall attempt to give a brief description of the current status and future prospects for Taiwan's pulp and paper industry.
