Abstract

Apparently healthy pigs, totaling 436, were examined for the presence of Yersinia in ileocecal contents.Yersinia enterocolitica (YE) was detected from 25 of them andY. pseudotuberculosis (YP) from one. The YE strains isolated were classified serologically as follows: 0: 3 (6 strains), 0: 5 (12 strains), 0: 7 (1 strain), 0: 10 (1 strain), 0: 11 (1 strain), the remaining 4 strains reacting with none of antisera 0: 1 to 0: 34. TheYPstrain isolated belonged to type II.
There was a tendency forYEto be detected at a low rate in the hot season. Whether swine carryYEor not seems to be dependent upon the eivironmental condition of raising. The detection ofYEwas more readily from the ileocecal contents than from the gastric, jejunal, or rectal contents. when it had been tried by the PBS enrichment method.
