Abstract

In March and April, 1974, a type of dermatitis occurred to 238 piglets of 24 litters and 171 (59%) piglets died or were condemned. It presented symptoms quite similar to those of exudative darmatitis. Eczema and eruption extended from the hypogastric and auricular region to all over the body. Exudate was attached to the surface of the body, which turned to be dark brown in color. There was no difference in the serum protein fractions as determined by cellulose acetate membrane electrophoresis between the affected and healthy swine. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from the skin lesions and parenchymatous organs of the affected swine.
