Abstract

A total of 1, 770 broiler and 1, 180 layer day-old chicks from 5 brands of 14 lots of breeders wre secured from 4 different hatcheries over a period from January to July, 1979. All the lots of chicks were each sorted out 25 first grading chicks (chicks A) and second grading chicks or selecting chicks to discard (chicks B) in. the hatchery. All the day-old chicks were examined for the presence of gizzard erosion.
Gizzard erosion was much higher in incidence in chicks B than in chicks A and in males than in females. Day-old chicks with gizzard erosion were lower in average body weight than those free from the erosion. Grossly, gizzard erosions were poppy seed to millet in size appeared frequently near the isthmus.
Histopathologically, the gizzard lesion revealed softening or loss of the keratinized lining, loss of the goblet cell-like structure of the surface epithelial cell, and partial or complete disappearance of columns of translucent material from the lumen of the glandular tubules beneath the same lining. Necrosis and remarkable hemorrhage of the lamina propria were noticed in the severe erosin.
