Haemophilus parasuis was isolated from the nasal cavity in 257 of 318 (80.8%) conventional pigs reared in 12 conventional farms in Shizuoka Prefecture, whereas 3 SPF farms were negative. Fifty-one (83.6%) and 10 (16.4%) of 61 isolates examined were shown to be of types I and II, respectively, by polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. Complement-fixation (CF) antibody against H. parasuis was detected in 171 of 203 (87.4%) conventional pigs, whereas 98 SPF pigs examined were negative for the antibody. Of the slaughter house pigs 278 cases examined had the CF antibody, while no correlation between the antibody titers and chronic serositis was demonstrated.
