An outbreak of infection with Salmonella Typhimurium occurred at a nursery school in Gyoda city of Saitama Prefecture in September to October, 1992, appearing to be different from poisoning due to a single food. S. Typhimurium was isolated 20 of 131 (15.2%) children's stools examined, as well as from the sand of the sand pit and the sponge of cleaning mops. The plasmid profiles and antibiotic resistance pattern of the isolates suggested that the sand was possibly source of the infection.
