Fecal samples from 4, 914 slaughtered cattle were examined for verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC). Eleven strains of VTEC were isolated, and their serotypes were O26: H-(one strain), O26: H11 (four strains) and O157: H7 (six strains). The VTEC-positive cases were distributed in eight prefectures of Japan.
