Abstract

Suckling piglets delivered from sows that had complement-fixing antibody titers of 1: 32 againstA. pleuropneumoniaeserotype 1 were infected with this organism at as early as 10-day-old. Maternal antibody gradually declined and was not demonstrated hereafter 40-day-old, and pneumonic lung lesions were first detected in a piglet sacrificed at 46-day-old. From the results obtained here it was suggested that piglets were infected with A. pleuropneumoniae from their carrier sows at the early stage of suckling but the onset of illness might be delayed until maternal antibody disappeared.
