We have proposed a new experimental method of generating Mach reflection phenomena in solids. The method is based on the refraction of a plane shock wave by a shaped material interface. The plane shock wave is generated in a target assembly by a flat plate impact of a highspeed projectile driven by a high-pressure gas gun.
The shock collision phenomena have been studied by observing the sudden drop in the reflectivity of a mirror placed on a target material free surface. A compact high-speed streak camera system has been used for this purpose. We have made several experiments, and found that the present method is effective in observing the shock collision phenomena.
