Abstract
Effect of preservative treatment by pressure process was investigated on timber contaminated with the pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Buhrer) Nickle). Sapwood sample timber with living nematodes, 4×9×100cm, was impregnated with either one of wood preservatives, DDAC, CUAZ, ACQ or water. After the impregnation, the living nematodes in the samples were extracted by Baermann funnel method and counted under a microscopic observation. In the analysis, the living nematode was not discovered in the preservative treated timber but in the water treated timber, which indicates pressure process with wood preservatives are effective to prepare the pinewood nematode free timber. Percentages of preservative penetration were less than 100% except for DDAC treated timber. These results suggest that complete penetration is not necessary to eradicate the pinewood nematode.
