This note examines the role of financial education in management of technology (MOT) schools. We first review financial innovation in the 1990s, when there were close relations between MBA schools and financial institutions. In contrast to MBA schools (which teach financial engineering), MOT schools do not directly teach business innovation. Furthermore, as the role of the MOT school is to educate innovators rather than teach innovation per se, technology management is not as popular as financial engineering. Financial education at MOT schools trains engineers to understand executive thinking and to get a feel for the global marketplace.
In this paper, we discuss the aims and effectiveness of financial analysis exercise and financial engineering education at the Shibaura MOT school.
