Abstract

The total of 204 pregnant women admitted for delivery in a hospital in Tokyo during the period of October 1971-January 1972 were investigated on their history of acute infectious diseases and family history by questionnaire and their circulating antibodies including cord blood.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1) The average age of the mothers was 27.1 years and the average number of brothers and sisters was 3.8 and the first and second births occupied 88.2% of the total births.
2) Diphtheria antitoxin, Rubella HI antibody, and Toxoplasma antibody in the circulating blood of the mothers were examined; 72.6% had the value less than 1/30 IU of diphtheria antitoxin, 92.3%, positive Rubella HI, and 32.5% more than 1: 32 toxoplasma antibody.
3) The total of 74 (36.3%) among 204 mothers had T-agglutinin against group A streptococci including T1, T3, T4, T6, T8, T9, T12, T25, T44, B3264, and T-agglutinin against T4 and T6 were most prevalent.
And, among 120 pair sera of mothers and placental cord bloods, the total of 33 (27.5%) mothers were positive in T-antibody and the total of 27 (81.7%) cord bloods among them were also positive in T-ag-glutinin of the same type to the mother, clearly demonstrating placental transfer of T-antibody.
