The present study investigates Japanese English learners’ complimenting behaviors as found on Instagram. Unlike interactions in person, there are unique aspects concerning communication strategies using Instagram. Specifically, complimenting behaviors are the focus of the study with the aim of eventually teaching Japanese English learners how to compliment in English. Data was collected by questionnaire. The results indicate users utilize the “Like” button to directly and indirectly compliment others, and also use it for different purposes other than complimenting. It was also found that they expect others to compliment their posts to some extent, as well. Teaching pragmatics has currently been getting much attention because it leads to acquiring practical l anguage use concerning things such as complimenting. Investigating how complimenting is spontaneously used in a first language may help inform teachers on how to more effectively teach a second language.
