Natural convection in horizontally stratified porous media heated from the side is studied analytically and numerically. The analysis assumes the boundary layer approximation and similarity solutions are obtained for temperature distributions, velocity profiles and the heat transfer characteristics. The analytical solutions can approximately describe the effect of layering in permeability on the convective behavior, except near the interface where the flow changes abruptly. It is also shown that they compare well with the numerical solutions for overall heat transfer behavior.
