A study of oscillation of a magnetic fluid plug in a U-tube was made, which is relevant to the development of a magnetic fluid plug actuator. Oscillatory motion of the magnetic fluid occurs under the influence of harmonic oscillations of magnetic field and drives the oscillating flow of distilled water as a working fluid in the U-tube. The effects of some quantities such as the length of the magnetic fluid plug and the position of the upper interface against the center of the applied magnetic field on the oscillation have been clarified experimentally. Theoretical consideration, assuming laminar resistance and another flow one in a U-tube, has also been carried out in order to explain these experimental results.
