We numerically predicted the spray pattern of a swirl-type fuel injector of an automobile engine by two-phase flow analysis. The injector was an "L-step nozzle" injector, whose tip is cut into a L shape to control the spray pattern. We used the "Volume of Fluid (VOF)" method and "Finite Volume Method (FVM)" with an unstructured mesh for the analysis. We numerically investigated how the spray pattern depended on the step height and found that predicted spray patterns with a "horseshoe-shape" with rich and lean regions agreed well with measured ones. Therefore, we concluded that the VOF method can successfully predict the appropriate step height of the L-step nozzle to control the spray pattern of a swirl-type fuel injector.
