The excitation mechanism and the onset of a certain type of vibration in a sieve tray column, reported in a previous paper, has been experimentally studied using a small size model. The characteristics of the pressure pulsation of the air chamber have been investigated. It was found that the tray vibration under consideration is a kind of self-excited vibration resulting from the interaction of the tray vibration and the bubble formation on the sieve tray. Then, criteria for predicting the onset of such instability are proposed in a similar form with those for fluid-elastic vibrations of the bundles.
