As austempered ductile iron (ADI) has high tensile strength and high hardness, it is expected to be widely used in the future. However, the tool wear in ADI becomes larger than that in the gray cast iron and the tool reaches the tool life in a few minutes in the turning with a cemented carbide tool. In this study, in order to find out the effective tool material for the turning of ADI, three kinds of the coated cemented carbide tools and two kinds of the ceramics tools were used. The tool wear in turning of ADI was experimentally investigated under the cutting conditions of the cutting speed of 0.5 to 6.67 m/s, the feed rate of 0.2, 0.4 mm/rev and the depth of cut of 1.0 mm. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) The Ti (CN) Al2O3-TiN coated tool had the slowest wear progress among three coated tools. (2) The Al2O3 ceramics tool had the similar tool wear progress to the Ti (CN)-Al2O3 TiN coated tool. (3) In the turning of ADI with the Al2O3 ceramics tool and the Si3N4 ceramics tool (at the low cutting speed), the abrasive wear was observed on the flank. (4) In the case of high feed rate 0.4 mm/rev, the tool wear of the Si3N4 ceramics tool did not increase rapidly. On the contrary, the Al2O3 ceramics tool tended to be broken easily and the coated layers of the coated tools were easily exposed.
