Abstract

Benign multicystic mesothelioma of the peritoneum (BMMP) is a rare lesion condition that occurs mainly in young to middle-aged women. Here we report a case of BMMP. The patient was a female in her 50’s who presented with lower abdominal pain. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography detected a multicystic tumor in the right lower abdomen. Laparotomy revealed small cystic lesions in the omentum and near the right ovary. Stamp cytology of the tumor showed that clustering tumor cells with little atypia formed sheet-like structure. Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor consisted of cysts lined by a single layer of flattened cells, and there were no atypical findings. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for calretinin and D2-40. According to these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as BMMP.
