The purpose of this study is to enhance the reliability of a scale developed by Fujita (2024) to enable a quantitative evaluation of Japanese university students’ self-efficacy in dictionary look-up behavior. Specifically, the study aims to improve the scale by incorporating the accuracy of selected word definitions as an external criterion representing the ability in dictionary look-ups. At the same time, it examines the content validity of the question items and seeks to reduce the number of items in the self-efficacy scale to lessen the burden on respondents while maintaining high measurement accuracy. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire, an English proficiency test, and dictionary look-up tasks. To verify reproducibility, the questionnaire was repeated approximately two months later. Factor analysis and detailed examination of questionnaire items were conducted to identify a set of items with high correlation to external criteria. As a result, three items from Fujita’s (2024) original scale were eliminated, leading to the creation of a 13-item questionnaire. The newly developed scale allows for efficient measurement of self-efficacy in dictionary look-up behavior with fewer items, facilitating its application inside and outside the classroom. Future research will focus on assessing the impact of improved self-efficacy on dictionary-based learning and instruction, aiming to promote dictionary use in educational settings.
