To decompose benzene derivatives which do not absorb the ruby laser beam, the mixed targets of benzene derivatives with nickel, zinc, selenium or phosphorus powder have been heated by the normal ruby laser. The mixed target of phenylalanine gives toluene and benzene as the main products, and the ratio of benzene to toluene shows the largest value for the target mixed with phosphorus. The decomposition of phenylace-tamide and dibenzyl shows similar results to that of phenylalanine. By the laser heating, the mixed target of benzoic acid is decomposed in methane and in halomethane. The products are benzene and toluene in the former, and are benzene, toluene and halobenzene in the latter.
From the experimental result that the product ratio in the laser heating differs from that in the conventional heating, the reaction mechanism induced by laser is discussed.
