Development of a Watch Equipped 3-Axis Accelerometer

Abstract

We introduce our newly developed running watch equipped 3-axis accelerometer (ASICS AP01). The watch comprise a three-axis acceleration sensor to count SPM (SPM is an abbreviation for "Step Per Minute"). The detecting circuit to count steps can be small and support not only run but also walk by using three-axis acceleration sensor. Also our newly developed algorithm enables detecting SPM based touchdown impact (landing impact) of the foot and swing of the arm during running/walking with checking the watch display. Furthermore, we were able to achieve the high-precision detection by optimization of detecting condition.
