Abstract

This paper aims to clarify, based on different types of fact-finding surveys, the situation of Japanese students, especially nursing students, under the COVID-19 disaster. Their situation is examined from three perspectives: economy, study and mental health. Firstly, in their economic situation, this paper indicates the tension between the economic demand for earning money with a part-time job and the academic demand for refraining from it for on-site clinical training. Secondly, their situation concerning study is characterized by two possibilities. The one is that nursing students suffered from a conflict between their anxiety about infection caused by practicing an on-site clinical training and their anxiety about falling behind in learning because of its cancellation. The other is that they were subjected to both the positive and negative action on their occupational identity as a nurse. Finally, as for their mental health situation, this paper suggests that they would be caught in a dilemma between the increasing risk for depression, caused by discipline for infection prevention which is reinforced by role-expectation as a nursing student, and the increasing risk for infection which can arise due to its neglect.
