The historical background, current situation, and problems of high definition printing are discussed, in particular, a detailed presentation is given of the halftone dot size changes incurred in each stage of the printing process, specifically the process starting with scanner color separation and ending with printing by PS plates. The conclusion is reached that with the increasing use of high definition printing, stochastic printing (FM screen printing), and other high density printing techniques as a means of improving quality, it is imperative to determine which technologies will prevail and to what extent.
