Abstract
Objective: Simple criteria for metabolic syndrome in Japan were recently proposed; however, the relationship between these and post-challenge hyperglycemia during the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) are un clear. Method: In the present study, we conducted examinations to determine post-challenge plasma glucose using 75gOGTT. Of 308 dry dock subjects,8.7% were found to have metabolic syndrome (males,12%; females,1.1%). Results: In a 75g OGTT, males with metabolic syndrome had significantly higher levels of plasma glucose after 1 and 2 hours than those in the non-metabolic syndrome group (1 hour, p=0.0083; 2hours, p<0.0001). Rates of diabetes and/or IGT in the male metabolic group were significantly higher than those in the non-metabolic group (diabetes and IGT, p=0.0025; diabetes, p<0.0001). Post-challenge hyperglycemia without fasting hyperglycemia with diabetes in the metabolic group was also significantly more frequent than that in the non-metabolic group (p=0.0285), while the fasting hyperglycemia without postchallenge hyperglycemia with diabetes in the non-metabolic group was higher than that in the metabolic group. Conclusions: We concluded that the present criteria for metabolic syndrome in Japan are able to reflect post-challenge hyperglycemia.
