Abstract
The purpose of this report is to analyze the etiology, frequency and position of the abnormal ossification in the lumbar spinal canal in 47 patients who had lumbago and sciatica.
The ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament was seen in 23 males and 15 females.
The frequency of occurrence of it was higher in men in their thirties and fourties and found in lower lumbar spine. This was related to the degeneration of the lumbar discs or to a general disposition of ossification.
The spur of posterior edge of the vertebral body was recognized in two females, the ossification of the yellow ligament in four males and in three females, the ossification of the epiphyseal ring in three males and in two females and unclassified ossification in one female.
