Abstract

The middle-term results of open Sternocleidomastoid tenotomy for muscular torticollis were evaluated for 36 of the patients. Satisfactory results were obtained in 25 cases (69%). The postoperative formation of the lateral bands was the main factor in unsatisfactory results. It was likely to occur in those who had a postoperative fixation by plaster casts or bandages. We conclude that complete excision of the distal part of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and postoperative physical therapy including manual stretching to maintain the overcorrected position are important for obtaining better results in the neck.
