Fourteen patients with low back pain were studied using MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). The findings being concerned in the operation, myelogram, metrizamide CT and the plain roentgenogram were compared with MRI.
Saturation recovery (TR=500msec) and calculated T1 image (T1=200msec, TR=1000msec) were mainly used.
The results are as follows.
1) Intervertebral disc herniation seems to be able to be diagnosed.
2) Lumbar canal stenosis was difficult to diagnose because of the low signal intensity of the posterior elements of the vertebrae.
3) Caudal tumor was differentiated from the caudal nerves.
4) MRI will be able to take the place of myelography and CT.
