The treatment of complete dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint (Tossy Type III) has been the subject of continued controversy, as indicated by the large number of both surgical and nonsurgical modalities.
Eight cases of arcomioclavicular dislocations were treated by modified Dewar's procedure and followed up for more than 6 months. They included 6 males and 2 females who fell on the point of the shoulder. The age at injury ranged from 15 to 51 years with an average of 29.1 years, and the follow-up period ranged from 6 months to 1 year and 8 months with an average of 1 year.
In all patients the range of motion of the treated shoulders was not limited, and they did not complain of pain on motion.
All patients experienced no problem on ADL and obtained complete return to previous activities.
This study showed that the modified Dewar's procedure was widely indicated for the complete dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint.
