Abstract

We are trying to apply metal-ceramic composites, i. e., metals coated with Hydroxyapatite (HAP) or α-Al2O3 (Alumina) for joint replacements. The osteoporosis of the patients, however, has the influence on the long term results of joint replacements.
So we investigated histologically the reaction of bone to ceramics in an experimentally induced osteoporotic model by neurotomy. In this study HAP showed better tissue affinity than Al2O3.
