128 hips in 109 patients with congenital dislocation of the hip treated by Pavlic harness initially were reviewed to analysis the radiological course of the capital femoral epiphysis. The median age at late review was 5.3 years (range, 2-15 years).
The epiphyseal deformities were classified into three types according to the extent of the defect. 52 hips were recognized one of the three types of the deformities. Eight hips of 52, in which epiphyseal deformities were apparent with metaphyseal changes, developed the avascular necrosis, and were seven of eight nuclear ossification delayed.
It is thought that early metaphyseal changes and delayed ossification are preceded the development of the avascular necrosis.
