We reviewed one hundred and five patients greater than 59 years of age who sustained femoral neck fracture and were treated operatively at Fukuoka Red Cross Hospital between 1983 and 1987.
The mean age was 77.4 years (range, 60-98). 80% were women (84/105) and 20% were men (21/105).
49 cases were intracapsular fracture, 56 cases were intertrochanteric fracture, and only 2 were subtrochanteric reversed oblique fracture.
The mean age of the patients with intertrochanteric fracture was 3 years higher than that with intracapsular fracture.
We evaluated the grade of osteoporosis based on Singh's classification and 85% of the patients were evalutated to be osteoporotic.
83% of the patients had one or other complications preoperatively, and only the urinary tract infection was the main postoperative complication (43%).
