Abstract
We performed an experimental study to assess the effectiveness of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase inhibitor in the treatment of an acute compression injury of peripheral nerve using 48 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. The degree of nerve injury was assessed using the sciatic functional index, which has been shown to be a reproducible and reliable method for assessment of sciatic nerve function in rats. Administration of Piroxicam (cyclooxygenase inhibitor) and Takeda-AA861 (lipoxygenase inhibitor) failed to have any beneficial effect.
Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that steroid therapy reduces the functional deficit caused by acute compression injury of peripheral nerve in rats. This study indicates that inhibition of cyclooxygenase and/or lipoxygenase is not sufficient to reduce acute compression injury of peripheral nerve.
