We report 14 cases of psychiatric patients with orthopaedic injuries. The mean age at the time of injury was 48.9 years (range 24-75). The mean follow-up period was four years and seven months (range, two months to 12 years and eight months). Patients were evaluted both clinically and radiologically.
Five patients were treated surgically, one of whom resulted in nonunion.
Nine patients were treated conservatively. Three patients were judged to achieve poor results.
It is necessary for orthopedic treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders to involve co-operation between the psychiatrist and orthopaedic surgeon during the pre-and post-operative period.
