Abstract

Localization of gastrin (G) cell in the intermediate zone was observed by indirect im-munofluorescence method. The samples of gastric mucosa, obtained by endoscopic biopsy or from resected stomach, were fixed with pre-cooled 95% ethanol, and stained with rabbit anti-gastrin serum (CIS) and FITC-labelled goat anti rabbit IgG serum.
At first, we confirmed the existance of G cells in the intermediate zone. The G cell population was dominant in the mid-zone and rare in the lower-third of the glands in the intermediate zone. Futhermore, the G cells were seen at the fundic side of the atrophic border, in where fundic glands were replaced with pseudopyloric glands.
These results presented herin strongly suggested that the G cells might newly appear at the intermediate zone with the spread of atrophic gastritis.
