Abstract

UDP-galactosyl transferase activity in biopsy specimens obtained from gastric mucosa (the greater curvature of body, the angle and the greater curvature of antrum) and duodenal mucosa by using endoscope was determined, in various gastric diseases. The biosynthesis of mucosal glycoprotein as a defensive factor was discussed. The level of the enzyme activity was similar (189.7-202.8 U./kg protein) among the three of gastric regions in normal. The enzyme activity was high in the specimen from antrum of gastric ulcer subjects at scarring stage, antrum of erosive gastritis subjects and both antrum and duodenum of duodenal ulcer subjects. The enzyme activity was also high in level in the margin of the gastric ulcer at open stage, while it decreased at scarring stage. It suggested that glycosylation or biosynthesis of the mucosal glycoprotein which was one of the defensive factors was stimulated in these regions. In the atrophic gastritis, the enzyme activity was decreased in the specimen from body and the enzyme activity was increased in the three of gastric regions in gastric carcinoma.
