In 125 patients with liver diseases comfirmed by histological diagnosis, it was studied whether glutamic dehydrogenase (GLDH)/GPT ratio and GLDH/ornithine carbamyl transferase (OCT) ratio in sera were useful parameters for diagnosis of liver diseases with histological alcoholic liver injury. Serum samples in drinkers were obtained wihtin seven days after abstinence. Each serum enzyme was expressed with international units (I.U./l), and was compared each other. Since GLDH and OCT activities were increased in some cases without histological alcoholic liver injury, it was difficult to differentiate liver diseases with histological alcoholic liver injury from other liver diseases by only values of serum GLDH or OCT activities. In these cases, useful parameter was indicated by GLDH/GPT ratio in sera. GLDH/GPT ratios in sera were over 0.4 in most of patients with histological alcoholic liver injury, and were under 0.4 in most of patients without histological alcoholic liver injury. GLDH/GPT ratio in sera was suggested to be more useful than GOT/GPT ratio in sera as a parameter for diagnosis of liver diseases with histological alcoholic liver injury.
