India has more than one billion population; however the rate of people who live in urban area are still only 3%. As many as 97% of India’s population is the subject of rural health. According to the census in 2003, life expectancy rate at birth in India was 63.3 years, and adult literacy rate was 61%. This is the result from the situation in India has been remarkably improved during these 20-30 years. People in India had been struggling with poverty, illiteracy and inertia. In 1972, Dr. Vithalrao Vikhe Patil worried about such a situation and founded the Pravara Medical Trust with the objectives, to provide health care to the people in rural areas, to train medical and paramedical manpower in formal education, to demystify medicine through training community groups to cope with their health problems, and to conduct research leading to improving “quality of life” of the people. Pravara Medical Trust has been devoting to develop rural health in India. The 11th Asian Congress of Rural Health will be held in Aurangabad, located in the middle of India in December 2008. Aurangabad is one of the best ancient and historical city. It is also the place of interest for tourists. There are famous caves, forts and palaces such as Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, Daulatabad Fort, Bibi-ka-Maqbara, Baradari and so on. December is the most comfortable season in India, so the congress is planed in this month. We look forward to having a lot of people visit such a wonderful historical city in 2008.
