Localization of the efferent neurons of the stapedial muscle was studied in the brain stem of the adult cat using retrograde hoarseradish peroxidase transport technique.
After injection of HRP into the stapedial muscle, serial sections through the brain stem containing the facial nerve nucleus were made. The labeled neurons were observed ipsilateral to injection site and many of these neurons were located out side the main facial nucleus.
They lay anterior or dorsal to the main facial nucleus and they were seen adjacent to the superior olivary nucleus or trigeminal sensory nucleus. This result agrees with the finding of Lyon, (1978).
