Abstract

The effective utilization of a triplet exciton (T1) is of practical importance for developing organic light emitting diodes. T1 formation at low voltage without forming a singlet exciton has been considered and explored as a promising way to reduce the energy consumption of these devices. In this work, we demonstrate such selective T1 formation by using a charged molecule. We conducted single-molecule electroluminescence measurements on a negatively charged 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylicdianhydride (PTCDA) on NaCl/Ag(111) using a scanning tunneling microscope. While both phosphorescence and fluorescence appear at a high applied voltage, only phosphorescence occurs at a low voltage. Owing to the unpaired electron in the charged molecule, spin-dependent electron removal occurs from the highest occupied molecular orbital, and T1 is exclusively formed at a low voltage.
