Aluminium, single crystal or coarse grained, lightly deformed in tension (1-12%) was examined by X-ray diffraction microscopy (Berg-Barrett method).(1) The X-ray micrograph shows two sets of lamellae consisting of white and darkbands. One set of them (lamella K) is almost parallel to the plane of kink bandsand another set (lamella S) to the primary slip plane, though the latter occasionally has an orientation considerably different from it. Lamella K is revealed long before kink bands can be detected optically, while lamella S is often absenteven
at the stage of deformation that optical examination clearly reveals many slip bands. (2) The crystals whose orientation lies near the [100] zone show only lamella K, while those near the [110] zone show both lamellae. (3) A slightrotation of the specimen may bring some region in the white band into a reflecting angle, the position of maximum intensity of the dark band remaining unchanged. From this fact, it may be supposed that the band figure is due to the
existence of band regions subjected to local rotation as well as to an extinction effect resulting from distortion. (4) The appearance of this figure is unaltered by annealing until polygonization occurs.
