Hot dipped tin plate is chiefly used for food cans which must be strongly corrosion resistive. When the tin plate is used for such a purpose, the inside of the can becomes often discolored purple or black. To prevent the discolouration, the plate is usually coated with special corrosion-resisting laquers or electrochemically treated.
The surface structure of the, tin plate is of two different types: one is susceptible of discolou-ration, or corrosive, and the other is not, and from the metallographical standpoint, the micro-structure of the two and the corrosion mechanism are investigated.
A great many investigations that have been made on the mechanism of tin plate corrosion were mostly electrochemical. The observation made under microscope in this work on the relation of metal lographical structure to corrosion shows that the surface structure with uniformly oriented crystals is corrosion resistive and that with many defects leads to corrosion at random points due probably to segregation of impurities at edge dislocations.
