(1967) that the foveal luminance threshold of a test patch surrounded by a contiguous annular inducing field shows decrement and increment under various combination of luminance and area of the inducing field. The present study was an attempt to examine whether the same effect exists when there is some separation between the test and inducing fields. The test spot subtending 12.27' in diameter was presented at the center of the black field surrounded by a ring-shaped inducing field whose inner diameter was 36' in visual angle. The results of 2 Ss were as follows. (1) As the inducing luminance increases from -2.5 to 0.5 log mL, the threshold luminance once decreases below the control level (the one measured without IF), and then gradually increases. (2) Maximum enhancement point where the minimum value of the test threshold appears, tends to move toward the lower values along the inducing luminance axis as the inducing area increases. (3) When the inducing luminance is high, the threshold luminance increases as the inducing area increases. These results are in accordance with those previously reported by Tanaka et al., though the amount of inducing effect is smaller as compared with the previous one. This decrease in the amount of inducing effect will be partly ascribed to the separation between the test and inducing fields. When the inducing luminance is very low (-2.5 log mL orso) the test threshold luminance
