The automobile industry has faced major changes over the past few decades, including the electrification of powertrains and the rapid growth of the Chinese automobile industry. This paper shows that even under these circumstances, Japanese automakers and auto-parts companies overall remain highly competitive, but that small and medium-sized auto-parts companies have stagnated due to globalization, modularization of production, the spread of common platforms, and the development of CASE vehicles. This paper argues that the auto-parts industry has become polarized since the 1980s between giant companies on the one hand and small and medium-sized companies on the other.
