Japan’s electronics industry has lost global market share since 2000 and has struggled accordingly. However, the electronic parts industry maintains relatively competitive. Many of today’s electronic parts manufacturers were founded between the 1930s to 1950s and have a long history of post-WWII development. This study focuses on the history of Teikoku Tsushin Kougyo to examine (a) the formation process, and later the decline, of the “Japanese supplier system,” and (b) how electronic-parts makers have cultivated their technological and production capacity.
