An analysis of planned developed urban area stock around Tokyo with road width data

Abstract

Urbanized area has been expanding around Tokyo since Kanto earthquake disaster in 1923. Some of them are planned development, the others are urbanized on farm fields to become urban sprawl. Hundreds of planned developments have been listed without its geographical area. Generally these area have wider road than 4m regulated by the Building Standards Act, and it help us to distinguish planned urbanized area from urban sprawl area. In this study planned urbanized area and urban sprawl area around Tokyo are estimated with road width data of Digital map (National land basic information). Then the characteristic of their distribution are analyzed with the decade when these area were urbanized.
