Electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) is generated through the electron transfer reaction between radical species produced by electrode reactions. In this review, the author focuses on the relationship between the electronic state and excited state energy levels of luminescent molecules and the redox potential of the molecules, which has not been paid much attention to, and discusses how these relationships affect the ECL efficiency and intensity.
